WiFi Technology

Most people have heard of WiFi technology at some time or another, but not everyone is totally clear on what it is.

The abbreviation, WiFi is short for Wireless Fidelity, which is a limited range wireless networking protocol, based on the 802.11 standard.

WiFi connectivity allows users to transfer digital data wirelessly, at broadband speeds. It can be used to construct a local network of computers, or to connect your laptop to the internet when on the go.

The main limitation of WiFi technology is the fact that it only works in limited areas or "hotspots," and doesn't generally allow users to roam freely while maintaining a connection. The technology is gradually evolving, however, and longer-range solutions, such as citywide WiFi networks are becoming available in some markets.

At the current time, WiFi is primarily used as a way to build short-range wireless networks, covering a single home or office space. With the proper hardware, a user can quite easily set up a networking allowing them to move their computer form room to room, without breaking their connection.
